Wichita State University offers to its enrollees around 60 undergraduate with degree program. This includes Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Fine Arts, College of Engineering, College of Education, and the W. Frank Barton School of Business. Meanwhile, its graduate school has extensive program that has 44 masters’ degrees in 100 areas as well as specialization degree. It has doctoral degrees in chemistry, psychology, applied mathematics, communicative disorder and sciences, aerospace, mechanical and industrial engineering and educational administration. It holds at the maximum of 14,000 students from various state in the United States of America and also around 110 foreigners from other countries.
It is known to be as the Tier 2 National Universities according to the U.S. News and World Report Best colleges in the 2011 edition. While it ranks 88th place in the USA in the year 2009 for its development expenditures and engineering research aspect. It also ranks ahead of the Utah State University. While with regards to W. Frank Barton School of Business, it is ranked in the 11th place as the best program for students that are finding an undergraduate degree for entrepreneurship according to the Princeton Review 2011 edition.
Approximately around 1000 students all live in the dormitories located in the campus. Its main campus can be found in short driving distance from K 96 expressway and Interstate 135 in the north part of Wichita. Aside from that, it also hosts classes in four locations.
There are no known Greek organizations in the Wichita State University.
It is also actively part in the NCAA Division I which participates in a variety of sports like basketball, golf, track, cross country, tennis, softball and volleyball. Aside from that, club sports are also included like intramural sports, bowling and crew.
Its athletic color is yellow and black and its team name is shockers and has a mascot called WuShock. The name shockers are a reflection of the heritage of this university which is the fact that early students would earn finances via harvesting or shocking wheat in the nearby fields. Aside from that, the wheat field was used for football games and practices. Early on, the institution is called as Wheat Shockers and later on was shortened to Shockers. Its mascot on the other hand, gave a feeling of serious, no nonsense scowl and tough impression.
For the past three consecutive 31 years, the basketball and baseball team were considered to bagged most of the championship awards with its numerous NCAA tournament appearances and conference championships.
In the year 1989, the baseball team won the championship in the national category and became runner up in the years 1982, 1991, and also in 1993. In the year 2011, the men’s basketball team won in the National Invitation Tournament Championship and beats the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The bowling teams in both men and women’s division have also won their own distinctive awards in numerous USBC intercollegiate team championships in the years 2003, 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2009.
