Worcester Polytechnic Institute is a private institution that can be found in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the United States of America. It is devoted to applied sciences and technical arts. It is founded in the year 1865 and is considered to be as the first technology and engineering universities in the United States of America. It has fourteen academic departments which provide 50 graduate and undergraduate degree programs in management, technology, engineering, science, social science arts and humanities as well as masters, bachelors and degrees in PhD.
It is considered to be as the 11th in best engineering colleges by salary potential. According to the U.S. News and World Report, it is the highest tier university and in the recent 2011 edition, its undergraduate program ranks 62nd spot of the many doctoral universities there is in the United States of America. Aside from that, it is also known to produce high earn graduates. The BusinessWeek ranks it in the 15th place for the return on investment and beats the Ivy League schools and ranks it 1st place in part time MBA or Master of Business Administration as well as student satisfaction. Meanwhile, Forbes ranks it in the 9th spot for top colleges for getting rich. Also, its undergraduate major ranks 7th place in the list of top undergraduate game design programs which is in accordance to Princeton review.
The institution also provides housing to its enrollees who are planning to stay within the school premises. It is packed with private rooms for students to sleep, reading hall, and other facilities that will benefit the student the most especially in their academic affairs.
According to statistics, thirty percent of the students take part in the Greek Organization life. At present, there are five sororities and thirteen fraternities that are being acknowledged and accepted by the institution. Aside from that there is co-ed community service fraternity which is the Alpha Phi Omega. It also has its Greek week which is a yearly weeklong event and it is where the Greek Houses competes in events like float parade, talent show competition and capture the flag as well as water balloon toss and many more.
The fraternities acknowledged in this institution include Zeta Psi, Theta Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Pi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Phi Sigma Kappa, Phi Kappa Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Lambda Alpha Upsilon, Alpha Tau Omega, and Alpha Chi Rho. Meanwhile, the sororities include Theta Nu Xi, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Phi, and Alpha Gamma Delta.
Like other universities, it also is a member of the NCAA or National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III. Its engineers are part of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. It is active in athletics in the fields of baseball, swimming and diving, track and field, wrestling, football, soccer, crew, field hockey, softball, volleyball and basketball. It encourages both their women and men enrollees to take part of the athletic endeavors and competitions.
